Posted by Ankur Mittal 15 June, 2007 (0) Comment

google_logoGoogle will add a presentation application to its Google Apps lineup by year-end, and possibly could add other applications to that suite.

These include video, note-taking, blogging and group-discussion applications. Google also is aiming to establish parity between the offline and online capabilities of its productivity suite, says Matthew Glotzbach, director of product management in Google’s enterprise division.

Google last week introduced a set of APIs as part of a browser extension called Google Gears that will let Web-based applications work in disconnected mode.

Posted by Ankur Mittal 9 June, 2007 (1) Comment

Yahoo! Messenger is a popular instant messaging client and protocol provided by Yahoo!. Yahoo! Messenger is provided free of charge and can be downloaded and used with a generic “Yahoo! ID” which also allows access to other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail, where users can be automatically notified when they receive new email. Yahoo! offers PC to PC telephone, file transfers, webcam hosting, text messaging service, and chat rooms in various categories. In addition to instant messaging features similar to those offered by ICQ, it also offers (on Microsoft Windows) many unique features such as: IMVironments (customizing the look of Instant Message windows), address-book integration and Custom Status Messages. It was also the first major IM client to feature BUZZing and music-status. Another recently added feature is customized avatars.

Features

* Yahoo! Voice - Yahoo! Voice is a Voice over IP PC-PC, PC-Phone and Phone-to-PC service provided by Yahoo! via its Yahoo! Messenger instant messaging application.
* Voicemail and file sharing - Yahoo! added voicemail and file sending capabilities to their client. File-sharing of sizes up to 1GB was added.
* Plug-ins - As of 8.0, Yahoo! Messenger has added the ability for users to create plug-ins (via the use of the freely available Yahoo! Messenger Plug-in SDK), which are then hosted and showcased on the Yahoo! Plug-in gallery.
* Interoperability with Windows Live Messenger - This allows, for Yahoo! and Windows Live Messenger users to chat to each other without the need to create an account on the other service, provided both contacts use the latest versions of the clients. For now, it’s impossible to talk using the voice service among both messengers.

Yahoo Opens Panama Search Advertising Platform to Developers

Posted by Ankur Mittal 5 June, 2007 (0) Comment

Yahoo has announced that its Panama search advertising platform is open to third-party developers via the new Yahoo Search Marketing Commercial API Program, giving businesses and individual developers access to a series of application program interfaces so they can modify the Panama platform to suit their needs. The program offers three levels of partnership: a free Basic deal for small advertising agencies and technology companies as well as Advanced and Elite levels with varying subscription rates. All participants have access to technical support, while advanced partners receive account management support and a listing in Yahoo’s partner directory.

Elite partners, according to a Yahoo statement, can “leverage the Panama platform, resources and brand via regular business review, product council, road map coordination and joint marketing activities.” Early participants in the Elite tier include Efficient Frontier, Omniture, SearchIgnite and The Search Agency. Panama’s ad ranking system, which surfaces sponsored search results based on click rate in addition to how much advertisers pay, is an improvement from Yahoo’s prior system, which surfaced ads based solely on price paid in auction. Panama, which Yahoo hopes will help it catch-up to Google, also allows advertisers to target ads geographically.

Google Gears Beta Released - Offline Web

Posted by Ankur Mittal 1 June, 2007 (0) Comment

Google has launched a tool designed to make it easier for computer users to use online applications offline.

One of the key limitations of web services such as e-mail, word processing and calendars, is that they require a net connection to function.

Gears allows access to online data and applications inside the web browser when offline.

The tool was launched at Google’s global developer day, with 5,000 coders attending seminars worldwide.

Google Gears is an open source plug-in for browsers, which the firm hopes will lead to the creation of new web standards.

The firm wants many of the people attending its developers conference to use the Gears tools, which are free to use, to adapt their own applications for offline usage.

Using Gears, online data that is usually held on web servers can be stored offline on an individual’s computer, and then synchronised when the user logs back on to the web.
