Dell Latitude D830

authorSiddharth | July 31, 2007

Dell didn’t stray very far from its nearly year-old D820 with its new D830 model, but those still on the fence about a purchase may want to head over to NotebookReview, which now has a fairly thorough examination of the laptop from someone that took the plunge and bought one. While it certainly won’t stand out as much as some recent Dell laptops, NotebookReview’s “Commander Wolf” nonetheless found the unit to be “visually appealing,” with a solid construction and good performance, helped in no small part by its use of discrete graphics. On the downside, he unsurprisingly found that the D830 was “not a thin-and-light” and he was somewhat disappointed by an “unusually large” amount of light leakage coming from the bottom of the screen. The good Commander also thankfully took the time time to put the system through some benchmark tests.

Copyright Filtering Coming To YouTube This Year

google-logo-thumb Google could be rolling out some form of copyright detection for YouTube as early as next month. The release timeline comes from a Google attorney who is defending the company against Viacom’s $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against YouTube.

In a pretrial hearing Google’s attorney told the judge that the company was working “very intensely” on a video recognition technology and hoped to release it sometime in September.

The AP reports that the technology in question has been described as a means of fingerprinting digital files, supposedly as “sophisticated as fingerprint technology used by the FBI.”

However Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, has previously said that the copyright protection technology for YouTube would not be designed to filter out and block pirated content, rather it would “somewhat automate” the process by which content owners can flag illegally copied videos.

So has Google changed its plans for the filtering service? At this point no one outside Google knows for sure, but it certainly sounds like what the lawyer described would be capable of blocking uploads.

When asked for a comment, a Google spokesperson backed off the September release date saying, “we hope to have the testing completed and technology available by some time in the fall, but this is one of the most technologically complicated tasks that we have ever undertaken, and as always with cutting-edge technologies, it’s difficult to forecast specific launch dates.”

Microsoft to offer single download for Windows Live suite

authorSiddharth | July 30, 2007

MslivelogoMicrosoft will offer a Windows Live “installer” that will download and install software to access multiple online services, said Kevin Johnson, the president of Microsoft’s Platform and Services Division.

During his presentation at Microsoft’s Financial Analysts Day on Thursday, Johnson mentioned the Windows Live installer, saying that the company would begin beta testing it this summer.

He described it as a single download that will let consumers connect to multiple Live-branded hosted services, such as e-mail and messaging. People will be able to access these services from different devices, including PCs and phones, he said.

“This unified installation experience is one example of the more integrated experience we’ll deliver with the next generation of Windows Live services,” Johnson said.

Microsoft last month started beta testing two products that are part of what will be Windows Live suite: Windows Live Photo Gallery, which lets people organize and share photos on a PC and online, and online storage service Windows Live Folders.

Microsoft cuts Xbox DVD player to $179 in U.S.

xbox360-thumb Microsoft Corp. said on Thursday it would lower the price of the high-definition DVD player accessory for its Xbox 360 game console in the United States to $179 from $199, and add five free movies to anyone who buys the machine in August or September.

HD DVD is a next-generation technology developed by Toshiba Corp. and backed by Microsoft and film studios including Warner Bros. It competes with Blu-ray, a DVD system from Sony Corp., which is built into its PlayStation 3 game console, an Xbox rival.

Attaching the players to popular game consoles is seen by both camps as a way to get the technology into millions of homes, and pique consumers’ interest.

A mass market for high-definition video is still some way off, due in part to the high price of the devices. Blu-ray and HD DVD are battling for domination in a war reminiscent of the VHS-Betamax battle of the 1970s and 1980s. That war was won by VHS after about a decade.

Rival Sony cut the price of its PS3 game console earlier this month to ignite demand. Sony and Microsoft are in a three-way battle with Nintendo Co. Ltd. for control of a $30 billion video game market.
