Fake Internet Explorer 8 Alpha screenshots!!!

Posted by Ankur Mittal 5 July, 2007

A person at leneros.com has posted some of the images saying that the images actually are that of Internet Explorer 8 Alpha. The forum is in Spanish language so it may be difficult for some to understand. Here is the translated version of what he writes-

Internet Explorer 8 goes the development of the new explorer of Microsoft. At the moment, one knows that the greater priority of the company is to implement all the supports of RSS, CSS and AJAX within this new project.
In addition, also they have commented which this navigator will include support for the microformats, small labels written in code HTML that can be interpreted of different form, or like dates of a calendar or information of contact. The support for these microformats already was announced for the new version of Firefox, reason why Microsoft also will include it not to be behind its main competitor.
In fact, this new version of Internet Explorer is an answer towards Firefox 3, since Microsoft does not want that the navigator of Mozilla to them continues taking terrain. At the moment, the date of launching is not known, but Chris Wilson has announced that, at least, needs a year more development or even something more, reason why surely will be necessary to wait for near a year and means to be able to enjoy this new IE.

Here are some of the fake images of Internet Explorer 8 Alpha

Fake. Quite obviously fake.

They took the Office 2007 layout and modded it to look like Internet Explorer but they forgot to remove things like Word count and all the Office-only stuff at the bottom + the logos/icons/bars etc. are somewhat misaligned in some places.

Does it really matter what IE 8 looks like? Or what the featureset is? No matter what features it claims to have, those features will inevitably be broken, bugged, mixed with MS proprietary bullsh*t, badly designed, clunky, and STILL vastly inferior to Firefox and other browser products. MS should give up.

Totally Fake. MS Office + MS IE 7 = Very bad fake of MS IE 8. . .

I didnt even see that to know it was fake. Look at the tabs, and the webpages they are on. They dont even match up.

Whoever did this is obviously quite retarded and looking for attention to be “the First” of another crappy release of Internet Exploder.

Hideous, and due to it’s incredible ugliness I would not be surprised if they were real… It’d be so Microsoft-esque to release any ugly browser that *still* didn’t meet web standards.

Even if they are fake, chances are IE8 won’t be far off.

Aha - I agree - I didn’t even notice that from the thumb nails, just the whacky size of the images told me straight away, from a design stand point it is basically suicide for IE lol; but leaving the word stuff in at the bottom, god its funny!

Oh and the sites that should have a horizontal scroll bar don’t - :P

Or perhaps MS is looking at IE becoming the tool for both web browsing *and* entry level document creation? It may be faked, but I wouldn’t count on it. This is exactly the direction I would expect MS to go in. It is the only step they can take to both protect their market share in the browser and office software market.

IE is way behind.. by the time 8 comes out, FireFox will have had all its features and more!

July 5, 2007

Everything Flint said, and capitalization typo in the third image make this an easy FAKE. Why would there be a save button in IE? or Undo and Redo? Still…these are good ideas. But the only way Microsoft is going to save its IE franchise in the next decade or two is to go open-source. That’s how Firefox is gaining so quickly, and that’s how IE will fix a lot of its problems. And if open-source doesn’t work, then switch developers ;)

Definitely fake but it is a good concept. Hard to believe that Microsoft would make something that good looking and, theoretically, efficient. I doubt with all the shiny gadgets and buttons that many computers would be able to handle the computing, something microsoft is acutely aware of.

July 5, 2007

@Flint

That’s what microsoft does o.O. And if these are alpha screens (which I can easily see them being), they would work on functionality first, and mess with the layout later. What’s more likely, them not getting around to removing the things that are from Office, or someone making a fake with random details that are easily caught?

I’ve used other MS products, I’m willing to be these ARE alpha screens.

Flint is right - they’ve just merged IE7 and Office 2007 screenshots. Poor show.

July 5, 2007

I agree, this is obviously fake.

The ribbon bar has too much text in it. If MS were going to use the ribbon bar from Office it would have more buttons… you know… like Office.

I also don’t see why they would change their entire nav bar section to look ugly, that hardly makes sense.

Not to mention all the tabs are mislabeled… the screen is displaying channel9 and the tabs say “Google”

Posted by whizack
July 5, 2007

Completly fake they are not event high quality photoshops, although I have to say the approach is quite good from a User Experience point of view… and might work for a fresh approach to browse the internet, some usability issues but overall the concept is original.

I wonder if anyone from Microsoft might care about this kind of approaches… if anyone is interested I will go for building a prototype of a browser like this in WPF and see how far can it go, having contextual browsing will be amazing….

Not only fake, marked as mockups by the original author on Channel 9 (who is not a Microsoft employee).

Posted by RJ
July 5, 2007

Def. Fake. Onecare would not be ‘included’ in a tab because symantec and norton and the other AV companies would go nuts. The word artifacts are also funny - I really want to see what a website would look like in reading view. IMO this ribbon UI would be a step backwards from what we have today: I like the minimal ‘two line’ setup that IE7 has, and this is like double that size.

Posted by Komit456
July 5, 2007

So embarrassingly fake. The tab titles all say “Google” and the window titles all say “Channel 9″ even though the content changes in each “screenshot!”

Posted by Rob
July 5, 2007

You gotta be kiddin me!
You expect us to believe this crap.

This has got to be one of the worst photoshops ever.
In addition to what flint said, the save/undo/redo buttons on the title bar is still visible from word. AND the window title, tab name, and content in the images dont matchup at all.

Posted by Cy
July 5, 2007

Yep, IE 8 could very well adopt the Office 2007 UI, but the status bar gives it all away. It’s a clone of the UI, even with the “user is currently typing” icon intact. ;-) Good try… :-p

Yeah, definitely fake-looking, but some pretty interesting ideas in there. I kind of like the way that they’ve used the ribbon as a way of distinguishing between the types of things that a user might want to do on the web (although I’d call the first tab “browse” instead of “home”).

July 5, 2007

I, too, noticed what Flint had pointed out. Also, there seems to be some spelling errors–however slight–which allude to a photoshopped image, though a good one at that. In fact, this might be very close to what IE 8 looks like, as it seems like the Vista-fied direction Microsoft would take.

This is very very fake, if you look at the last image. On the menu, Windows is spelled WIndows.. i don’t think microsoft would use the wrong cases when dealing with their own product like that. And you can clearly tell the words were just move there by the quality around areas with words.

lol
a) The tabs don’t change
b) It’s obviosly taken straight from Word 2007 with the word count and all
c) Half of the graphics are ripped from other places (Like activesync instead of refresh)

I’d dare say that MS will use the ribbon idea to some degree though when IE8 does make its first appearance….. But nowhere near as awfully as that hopeless example

If this was an alpha the Interface would probably be the same as IE7. Usually in Alpha builds it’s usually testing a new Engine. They wouldn’t redesign the skin first I’m sure. Also if one looks hard enough on the Security Centre screenshot one can see it’s clearly copied and pasted on.

One find it written everywhere that firefox is safe and ie is horrible and ie is awful. We accept it without arguing. Thaey say MS is evil and mozilla is not. We accept this as a fact.
Never a question is raised - why firefox is safe, how does it protect us . How MS is evil. Are there any stats to support that. If yes then who collected those stats. What procedure was followed.

No company is there for charity or people welfare. Every one is in buisness for earning. It is stupid to campaign for a some one. Just use what you like. No one need to tell you what is good or what is bad. What is bad will die its own death. I use IE7 today. If tommorow a new version of firefox is released and I found it better, I will start using that.

Using the ribbon UI in IE is not a bad idea. I like the ribbon in Office 2007, it’s easy to use. Also pretty new UIs get people excited. The real new IE8 UI is nearly identical to IE7, which isn’t getting anyone interested.

My mom recently upgraded to IE 7 from IE 6. She had a hard time figuring out where the options were without the menu bar at the top. If IE 7 used a ribbon UI, I think her switch would have gone smoother.
