Dell PRODUCT (RED), XPS One Now Available in U.K., France and Germany

Late last dell introduced our Dell PRODUCT (RED) options to customers  in the U.K., France and Germany.  Customers in those countries now join in the fight against AIDS in Africa along with customers in the United States, Latin America and Japan.

Those (PRODUCT) RED PCs come with Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED, including (RED)-inspired desktop wallpapers, a new DreamScene, a screensaver, and Sidebar Gadgets.

Remember, Dell and Windows will contribute $50 when you purchase either the Dell XPS M1530 or M1330 (PRODUCT) RED laptops to the Global Fund, to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. Dell and Windows will contribute $80 when you purchase a Dell XPS One (PRODUCT) RED PC to the Global Fund as well. $80 can buy 6 months of antiretroviral treatment for a single person living with AIDS in Africa. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

Apple Introduces the new AirPort Express with 802.11n

Apple® today updated its AirPort Express® mobile base station with 802.11n to deliver up to five times the performance and twice the range of the previous model*. Priced at just $99, AirPort Express is the world’s smallest 802.11n-based mobile base station. It can be plugged directly into the wall for wireless Internet connectivity and USB printing at home or easily brought on the road for wireless freedom wherever there is an Internet connection. AirPort Express features AirTunes™, which works seamlessly with iTunes® to give users a simple and inexpensive way to wirelessly stream iTunes music from a PC or Mac® to any room in the house.

Flickr Video beta due in April

In early February, in the midst of Microsoft’s surprise bid to acquire Yahoo, I wrote about Yahoo’s Flickr Video coming soon. It’s been a long time coming. I first asked Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake about a Flickr video service in December 2005.
After spending a few hours at the Flickr fourth anniversary party in San Francisco on Saturday night, the "coming soon" line was uttered by various Yahoo people, including Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield. Upon further investigation, it appears that "coming soon" means that Flickr Video will debut in beta next month.
Flickr, which was acquired by Yahoo in March 2005, defined the concept of photo sharing, but has been slow to extend the service into the video world. In the meantime, Google’s YouTube has become the primary destination for video sharing, capturing one out of every three of the online videos in the U.S., according to comScore Media Metrix. Fox Interactive Media (MySpace) accounted for 6 percent of the nearly 10 billion videos viewed online in the U.S. in January. Yahoo sites, Yahoo Video, claimed 3.2 percent of video viewing.
Flickr Video will not replace Yahoo Video, unlike Yahoo Photos, which was folded into Flickr. The audience for Flickr is different, Kakul Srivastava, director of product management at Flickr, told me. She used the term "authenticity" to convey the esprit de corps of the Flickr photo community, which numbers more than 23 million contributors.
Flickr has been a pure photo site since its inception. Adding video into the mix has to be done in a way acceptable to the community. In other words, launching a Video service primarily to compete more with YouTube would turn the community off. It has to appeal, in an "authentic" way, to the Flickr community.
While YouTube has a large share of market, video is growing fast on the Web. The problem for Yahoo is that many Flickr members, like myself, have gone to other places to share videos. Winning them back is going to be a challenge. We’ll find out next month if all the time spent figuring out how to bring video to Flickr has been worthwhile.

Vista SP1 to hit Windows Update Tuesday

Microsoft will release Windows Vista Service Pack 1 next week to a wider audience, according to information posted on Amazon.com and reports from a Web site that correctly called SP1’s ship date last month.

Amazon currently lists Vista SP1 retail copies as available next Wednesday, March 19, while TechARP.com, the Malaysian Web site that nailed the update’s release to manufacturing (RTM) date several days early, said users would be able to download SP1 starting Tuesday, March 18.
