Virtual Earth Imagery Release, March 2009
Another huge addition to the digitization of our planet just hit the web last night – 21TB - all ortho imagery launched into Microsoft Virtual Earth, powering Live Search Maps (and other Live Search properties). Now, this one isn’t huge in terms of terabytes, oh no. This is huge in terms of square kilometers of the world. This should take you some time to get through. And, FWIW, there are a few countries on the list that I’m wondering if you’d ever heard of – Seychelles or Comoros anyone? Their tourism boards need to step it up! Also, don’t let these pictures fool you – you can zoom in far closer than I’ve captured.

Live Search Adds More Instant Answers
Earlier this month I told you about how you can use Live Search to check your flight status thanks to new one box results that include date, times, departure and arrival points, and links to live tracking provided by Farecast. Now the Live Search team has added in something else, which along with flight status, is considered a part of the new “Instant Answers” feature of the service. This latest addition is an Instant Answer for March Madness news. (That’s the NCAA tournament here in the U.S.). Just type in the search query “NCAA tournament”, “March Madness”, or “college basketball” and you will get the latest scores (as pictured to the left). You can also type in just the name of a team you want to see and you’ll get more details about their current rank:

New ESRI / Microsoft Virtual Earth Partnership Announced
This week during the Environmental Systems Research Institute Developer Conference in Palm Springs, CA, ESRI announced their extended partnership with Microsoft’s Virtual Earth business unit granting native access to Virtual Earth’s imagery and road network map data within ArcGIS Desktop and Server. How’s that for a footprint? At the very least it makes the GIS world a bit more interesting, no?
Here’s the official announcement:
ESRI Expands Virtual Earth Access in GIS by Teaming with Microsoft
ArcGIS Users to Bring Dynamic Basemaps into Analysis and Service Applications
Redlands, California—March 26, 2009— ESRI announced today a new agreement with Microsoft Corporation that gives ArcGIS users fast access to Microsoft Virtual Earth for their geographic information system (GIS) projects. As part of ArcGIS Online at the ArcGIS 9.3.1 release, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server users will be able to connect directly to Virtual Earth and quickly start their GIS projects with ready-to-use content.
"Our agreement with Microsoft defines a pattern of sharing geospatial data on the Web that promises to grow the GIS community," says ESRI President Jack Dangermond. "By bringing Virtual Earth into their GIS projects, people will have a greater opportunity to perform spatial analysis based on dynamic data."

WPF Toolkit March 2009 Update is posted
Here’s the official word from the WPF Tree Services & Controls Team:
We shipped some great new updates to the WPF Toolkit and WPF Futures on Codeplex earlier this week. These included an updated version of the WPF Toolkit with over 20 high-priority bug fixes for DataGrid, DatePicker, & Calendar, and also a package of WPF Themes (matching those shipped with the Silverlight Toolkit) as a new addition to the WPF Futures. We’ve also added a pointer to David Anson’s blog post with a preview of the WPF Chart Controls which are being written by the Presentation Platform Controls (PPC) team (the team who produces the Silverlight Toolkit).

Getting in touch with Windows 7: a Windows Touch deep dive
By now, you’re probably aware of key improvements to the user interface in Windows 7 which optimize for touch. And you realize that it will be an ongoing effort among hardware suppliers and application developers to build touch support into their technologies. But how much do you know about the Windows team’s approach with Windows Touch and what was done with Windows to make the interaction truly remarkable? The team has just added on its Engineering Windows 7 blog a very in-depth piece on what went into making Windows touchable. Read the Touching Windows 7 entry.
