Firefox passes 400 million downloads
Firefox just passed the 400 million download mark, according to the Spread Firefox site for promoting the open-source, extendable Web browser.
That number shouldn’t be confused with actual installations, Mozilla’s public relations folks rightly caution. (I’m sure I’ve downloaded it at least a dozen times this year, and I’m only using copies on three computers at present. On the flip side, there are any number of other ways to get Firefox, including Linux installations.) Nevertheless, 400 million is an achievement worth noting, given that just a few years ago it looked like Microsoft had the market locked up with Internet Explorer.
However, not everything is going swimmingly in Firefox land. Mozilla had hoped to release a Firefox 3 "Gran Paradiso" beta in July. Instead, Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla’s vice president of engineering, now says it’s due "this fall."

Firefox 3 has improved Password Saving

Opera 9.5 has got a new feature that it does not holds back the website from loading when prompted for “Save Password”.This gives the site oppurunity to continue log in and give the user the power to change the login credentials if unfortunately posted wrong.A simillar feature can be seen in the latest version of Firefox 3 - Nightlies ,but it is implented a bit better than that of Opera in the sense that Opera 9.5 uses a pop up dialog box to prompt for password saving whereas Firefox 3 uses a slim bar along the top of the site just like the Internet Explorer as shown in the image above it is small ,user friendly but cant be said pretty.
This feature is a good alternative to not still found feature of determining whether the login was successful, and if the login wasn’t correct prevent the password-saving option from even appearing.
Another Update that firefox has got is that now a bar appears asking for permission if the site asks you to install an extension whereas earlier one had to save the site in whitelist. But now one can temproraily allow it just like IE.

Windows Live Installer vs. Google Pack
Windows Live Installer is set to go against Google Pack this week. Back at the end of June Microsoft announced through the voice of Chris Jones, corporate vice president, Windows Live Experience Program Management, that its cloud operating system evolving under the Windows Live brand umbrella was moving into the new phase. Lagging well behind Internet rival Google in the area of serving web-based applications, Microsoft is of course leveraging its operating system monopoly in order to push the Windows Live set of online products and services.
And according to the NY Times, Microsoft is getting ready to rain on Google’s parade this very week. The Redmond company will unveil its Windows Live Installer, a product designed to be an equivalent of the Mountain View’s search giant Google Pack. With the mention that while the Google Pack is a bundle of both proprietary and third-party online software and services, Microsoft’s Windows Live Installer will deliver exclusively the company’s collection of offerings.
Microsoft has failed to officially confirm the delivery of the Windows Live Installer, but it is clearly heading into a direction that will permit it to bridge the Windows operating system, forecasted to hit an install base of over one billion by mid-2008, with its Windows Live cloud operating system. Following the availability of the Windows Live Installer users will have a single point access to downloads such as Windows Live OneCare, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Photo Gallery but also to services such as Windows Live Hotmail and SkyDrive.
In contrast, Google desktop is already offering for download a set of free applications including Google Earth, Google Desktop, Norton Security Scan, Firefox with Google Toolbar, Adobe Reader, Skype, Google Toolbar for IE, Spyware Doctor, Picasa, Google Talk and StarOffice, Sun’s alternative to OpenOffice and Microsoft’s Office System.
