Windows Server 7 (here we go again)

authorAnkur Mittal | July 19, 2008

Man, it seems like yesterday that we were dogfooding Longhorn Server.  But that’s long gone, and Windows Server 2008 has RTM’d, so it’s time for a break right?  Yeah, well, breaks over and there are new toys to play with already.

So congratulations to the operations team, the product group, pm’s, and everyone else that has put the effort in to get us to the point where we put the first Win7 domain controller in production:

Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR July CTP

We just released a new CTP of the upcoming 2008 update, Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR July CTP is here!

You can download it from MSDN:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=bb3ad767-5f69-4db9-b1c9-8f55759846ed&displaylang=en

Most important changes:

  • Project upgrade is now in place. For those of you who were kind enough to donate their database projects, thank you!
  • Mixed projects are no longer supported, from now on server projects represent only server creatable objects and user objects that need to be deployed to “master”. Another change is that server options will not get deployed; we only validate the settings as pre-requisites for a deployment. As such server options (sp_configure) have been added to the project system.
  • The interpreter now understands temporary tables, table variables and select into column sources.
  • The Static Code Analysis MSBuild task was added
  • XSD Reference user interface support is enable, but it does not yet create XML Schema Collections
  • And lots of fixes since CTP14

Please file bugs using Microsoft Connect and post questions on the MSDN forum.

Windows Live OneCare 2.5 beta ending, perpetual beta begins

According to a source of mine, following the official release of the final version of Windows Live OneCare 2.5, Microsoft sent out a flurry of e-mails to its testers. First off, the software giant reminded its testers that the 2.5 Beta will expire on July 31, 2008, after which OneCare will no longer keep itself up to date (both virus definitions and the actual software). Testers are urged to uninstall the beta and buy a full subscription, which is offered to them at a discounted $24.95 a year for up to three PCs, until July 31, 2008.

With the beta wrapping up, Microsoft quickly sent out another e-mail to certain testers asking if they wanted to continue to test new versions of the software. If the answer was yes, Microsoft responded with a confirmation and then the next day, e-mailed that tester the details of the Windows Live OneCare Perpetual Beta program, an invite-only group.

Microsoft® Robotics Developer Studio 2008 enables hobbyists, academics and commercial developers to create robotics applications targeting entertainment, educational, home, commercial, or industrial segments.

Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio supports a broad set of robotics platforms by either running directly on the platform or controlling it from a Windows or Windows Embedded device through a communication channel such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth®.

In addition to providing support for Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio provides a visual programming environment which allows developers to create applications simply by dragging and dropping components onto a canvas and wiring them together.

Windows 7 Makes It on Microsoft.com for the First Time

Windows 7 has managed to make it on a Microsoft.com home page for the first time. It’s an unlikely position for the next iteration of the Windows operating system, which the Redmond company is keeping tight under wraps for now. And even more so as, following the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2008, the past week in Houston, Texas, where the software giant indicated that it was focusing entirely on Windows Vista Service Pack 1. But still, Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, can rest assured that nothing has leaked on the successor of Windows Vista.

The official website of Microsoft Canada is the Microsoft.com localized home page that features the Windows 7 reference, under the highlights section. However, the fragment of text reading “Bill Veghte, Senior Vice President, Online Services and Windows Business Group, outlines Microsoft’s commitment to Windows Vista now and in the future,Microsoft’s support for Windows XP as we approach the retail end-of-sales date of June 30 and the future of Windows including Windows 7″ is nothing more than an excerpt from the official document signed by Veghte designed to trash Windows XP and Windows 7 as potential Vista SP1 alternatives.

Microsoft testing self-serve AdSense rival

microsoft-advertising-logoMicrosoft is ready to start expanding its AdCenter engine to allow at least some publishers to include contextual advertising from Microsoft on their site.

According to a letter detailing the program and published on TechCrunch, Microsoft is doing a pilot program that allows smaller publishers to use contextual advertising from Microsoft, putting it potentially in competition with Google’s AdSense and Yahoo’s publisher network.

In a statement provided to CNET News on Thursday, Microsoft confirmed the trial.

“Microsoft’s self-serve advertising offering for publishers is still under development and is currently in a private pilot phase, being tested by select publishers who met the participation requirements,” Microsoft said. “The private pilot phase began earlier this year.”

Microsoft pointed publishers interested in the pilot to sign up for the trial.
