Posted by Ankur Mittal 16 December, 2008 (0) Comment

MDM is a Microsoft technology that helps Windows Mobile 6.1 devices work within the IT infrastructure of a company as trusted and managed members of the enterprise.
MDM consists of the following four main system components: MDM Device Management Server, MDM Enrollment Server, MDM Gateway Server, and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 databases. The SQL Server databases must be installed separately.
These components work with key IT services to give managed devices access to selected business data. The primary IT services that work with MDM are the following: Active Directory Domain Service, MDM software distribution, certificate services, and line-of-business application servers, such as Microsoft Exchange.
To learn more about MDM, see System Center Mobile Device Manager TechCenter.

Expanded Live Mesh for Mobile CTP

Posted by Ankur Mittal 9 December, 2008 (0) Comment

The recent service update to Live Mesh addresses many of the issues users reported since we opened the Mobile CTP on Oct 30.

With the release of the updated Live Mesh for Mobile version 0.9.3424.9, we are expanding the CTP to more users. We are also lifting the country restrictions on access to the CTP – it is now open to all countries. [Access through a 3G network is recommended for a great experience.]

Since there is limited room in the expanded CTP, hurry on to https://www.mesh.com/Web/Promo.aspx?pcode=Mob_FCFS1 to add your Windows Mobile 6.x phone to your mesh. [Clicking this link will grant access to your Live ID for adding a WM phone to the mesh and redirect you to the device ring, where you can click “+” to see how to “Use Live Mesh for mobile devices”.]

If you already have the Live Mesh client on your WM6 phone, you should see an update notification the next time you login to Live Mesh from your phone. You can also navigate through Menu -> About -> Software Update, to install the latest client.

AOL Sync And Windows Mobile

Posted by Ankur Mittal 25 November, 2008 (0) Comment

AOL has just launched AOL Sync, a new tool that keeps your contacts and calendar (calendar coming soon) in sync between Windows Mobile, Outlook/Outlook Express, and AOL. The service works over-the-air so you only need to set it once in order for it to work.

With AOL Sync, you can synchronize your AOL Address Book and AOL Calendar data with your desktop apps, PDA, and mobile devices, including both Blackberry and Windows Mobile. This service is made possible thanks to AOL’s new partnership with Plaxo, a company that provides address book synchronization tools. At the moment, only the address book sync portion of AOL Sync is live, but the Calendar support is being worked on for the future.

You can try the new service here.

Microsoft working on App-store like software distribution

Posted by Ankur Mittal 10 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Steve Ballmer, at the recently held developers conference at Sydney, Australia, said that Microsoft is working on a App-store like software distribution. Apple’s iPhone and App-store have really stirred the Windows Mobile Market. Though there are many ‘app-store like’ distributions, for example - Handango, they are not something that is offered directly from Microsoft. But at the same time Ballmer also mentioned there are no plans to mimic iPhone’s App-store.
During the question-and-answer portion of his time on stage at an event the company billed as "Liberation Day" for Australian developers, Ballmer said that Microsoft will soon launch a service that will let programmers sell their wares directly to consumers.
"I actually will agree that there’s some good work, particularly at Facebook. and also with the iPhone, where both of those companies have made it easier for developers to distribute their applications," Ballmer said when asked whether Microsoft would provide a way for developers to create software and distribute it directly to users.
"[They've] made it easier to kind of get exposure for your applications," Ballmer continued. "There’s not much money being made, but the general concept of giving developers a way not only to get their code distributed, but to really get visibility for the code, is a good idea."
Microsoft does have WindowsMarketPlace, where developers can distribute their Software to PC users. At the worst, Microsoft can plug-in a Mobile category and throw in a mobile client to access and install apps directly to your mobile.

Microsoft: Expect surprises for Windows Mobile

Posted by Ankur Mittal 31 October, 2008 (0) Comment

Microsoft will shake up Windows Mobile when it offers a glimpse of the mobile OS’ future at February’s Windows Mobile Congress.

Speaking at the Microsoft showcase in London, Windows Mobile’s David Weeks told TechRadar that he was looking forward to revealing to the world what the future of Windows Mobile would be – but that the details would only emerge early next year.

"You’ll be surprised at what’s going to be happening with Windows Mobile," enthused Weeks.

"It will all be based around our plans for the consumer and will deal with the future roadmap of Windows Mobile, but I can’t tell you much more than that.

"We’re all really excited about it and it will really shake things up."
